Antigone Character Comparison Essay

From the play that I read, Antigone, there is a character that strongly identifies with me. Out of all of the characters, I discovered that Ismene has the most similarities as me than the others because we are both supportive and care for our family members, regardless of their actions.
To begin with, Ismene is reasonably a self-righteous person because she thinks ahead and follows the laws. The following quote will demonstrate simply as is, “But think of the danger! Think what Creon will do!” (47). In this line, Ismene is attempting to convince Antigone to not bury her brother Polyneices. Creon’s law says if anyone buries Polyneices, they shall receive grand consequences and Ismene wants to follow that law, so that he does not do anything to them. She simply just does not want any conflict with him.
Next, Ismene believes that it is best to not

“Go then, if you feel that you must. You are unwise, but a loyal friend indeed to those who love you.” (48). She says that to Antigone because she supports her even though she is doing the wrong thing. Technically, it is not the wrong thing because Antigone wants to pay her dues for her own brother. Ismene sees this and believes that Antigone is a good person because of that. Ismene wants her to be careful when breaking the law.
Furthermore, Ismene does not want her sister to die because she doesn't know what she would do if her sister wasn’t there with her alive. “What do I care for life when you are dead?” (56). In this quote, Ismene seems very caring towards her sister Antigone even after their small ‘argument’. The only reason why she wouldn’t know what to do without Antigone is because she would be Oedipus’ last child left, so she would be all by herself. Basically Antigone is Ismene’s other half because they are sisters and are also the only ones left ever since the battle between their brothers with both of each

Two major themes that run throughout Sophocles’ play Antigone are loyalty and power. Loyalty and power are what drive the play forward; this theme affects not only Antigone, but Creon as well. Both Antigone and Creon are affected by this conflict, but in different ways. Antigone is first introduced to us as a young and loyal girl to bother her brother and the gods, that only wants to make sure both her brothers have a proper burial; according to the laws placed by the gods if someone does not receive a burial there will be no way for family members to reconnect with them in their life after death. Creon, who is the king and Antigone’s uncle, sets a law in place that no one is to bury or even mourn the death of Polynices.…

Nobody encourages her to defy Creon’s orders and provide a proper burial for her brother, but rather, it is a decision that results from Antigone acting in accordance with her free will. When Ismene tries to convince Antigone that burying Polynices is not worth the risk and punishment of death, Antigone replies, “You have your excuses. I am on my way / I will raise a mound for him, for my dear brother” (Antigone 94-95). In this instance, Antigone is effectively taking a stand for what she believes in as she values family ties and loyalty as well as the virtue of courage.…

In this story, Antigone shows the most ‘unshakable will power’ out of all the characters. She is the character who provides the most will power because she is willing to do the right thing even if it means breaking a law. Antigone’s will power really emerges more than the other characters. Without even telling the king, she buries her brother to honor him and once the king finds out, she defends herself to the point where she could have been sentenced to death. Ismene says to Antigone, “Bury him!…

In Ismene’s refusal to take part in Antigone’s crime, she cries out, “Think how much more terrible than these our own death would be if we should go against Creon” (Sophocles 44-45) placing her fear of her uncle and his rule above all, before even contemplating what it is she wants to do. Throughout this, Ismene believes she is doing what is right for the good of the people, seeing no point in “break[ing] laws that were made for the public good” (Sophocles 65) In Ismene’s decisions we are shown her belief in how the authority and man’s law is more significant to her than what her heart believes is right. A shift in Ismene’s character occurs when she turns herself in to Creon in an attempt to share the blame with her sister claiming that, “[I] too have a duty that I must discharge to the dead.” (Sophocles 438)…
