A healthy group model has several different characteristics. One of the most important things about a successful healthy group is the consistency in the group. The manner in which the meeting, tasks, or people are set up is important. The group leader must maintain clear and consistent boundaries. Specific start and end times, standards for behavior, and ground rules for speaking are all important factors when talking about consistency. Even the way a group leader dresses matters. The setting and type of group usually determines appropriate dress. For an example the group leader should not come dressed in a suit one day and in a t-shirt the next. It is important for the leader to recognize that group members are in need of support and guidance. Another characteristic that is essential for any healthy group leader to have are listening skills. Its important that group members feel that they can speak freely and be heard, not just looked over. A group leaders should be listening or looking for verbal and non-verbal cues. A healthy group leader should also be in control of their own emotional state. If they are not this can cause conflict or even failure of a group. A group leader must be emotionally healthy and very aware of their own personal problems. If they are not these personal problems could be become confused with the issues faced by the group as a whole. It is extremely important for a leader should be aware of the boundary between personal and group issues. Leaders also need to be strong when it comes to clear internalized standards of conduct.
