Charles Manson became a guru after getting out of jail in the latter part of the 1960s, and would tell his followers that they were the reincarnation of the original Christians and that the establishment was playing the part of the Romans. While he did not outright say so, he told these people that he was Christ and had visions of being crucified. The female followers were all impressionable young women who came from middle class families whose parents had divorced. That all changed after he was sent to prison for conspiracy to kill Sharon Tate and the other four people who were staying with her, as well as Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Now, various bands have cover his music, bands such as Guns N Roses, Marilyn Manson, and White Zombie, as well as other artists.
Since his conviction, many books and movies (some documentaries have been made too, these include: "Life After Manson", "Charles Manson Superstar", and "Manson") have been made to document Manson's crimes. Some of the movies include "The Manson Family", "Leslie, My Name is Evil", and "Helter Skelter" (based off Bugliosi's book, and has been made twice, once in 2004 and once in 1976). At least four different times for television by four different people, and each time he makes for great television. Charlie Rose, Penny Daniels, Geraldo, and the last was by Diane Sawyer; this interview with Sawyer made California ban any interviewer from bringing in any kind of recording equipment. This was due to the sexually aggressive talk that he engaged in with her. Each time, he does a dragon-dance kung- fu dance that he only pulls out when cameras are set to record him. He claims that his dance is the main reason that he does any interviews with the media at all.
While being locked up, people will mail him letters or things to sign, he gets thousands of things in the mail each year, more than any other inmate. He signs some things with "Hippy cult leader made me do it".
To date, there is probably no serial killer that is as notorious as Manson is. He may not have the biggest body count of any killer, but his legacy is bigger than anyone
