To refer to Charlotte Bronte as a feminist would be saying it as polite as possible (Lowes). During the victorian period a woman’s place was in the home (Lowes). Charlotte Bronte wanted to do everything except stay at home and clean and cook. She wanted to create literature and actually be someone. She wanted to make a mark on the world. She was very concerned about women's rights and stood up for those rights (Gordon). Bronte was an intelligent youth who took an early interest in politics (Lowes). Bronte gave up writing poetry at the beginning of her professional career when she became identified in the public mind as the author of the popular novel “Jane Eyre” (1847) (“Charlotte Bronte”). Her decision to abandon poetry for novel writing exemplifies the dramatic shift in literary taste and the marketability of literary genres, from poetry to prose fiction, that occurred in the 1830’s and 1840’s (“Charlotte Bronte”).
