Summation of ?The Yellow Wallpaper? The short story ?The Yellow Wallpaper? takes place in the mid-nineteenth century during a time of great change in America; Women are discovering their role in the household to be more than simply homemaking. Author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, writes this plot based from her own personal experience when she went through a time period of mental sickness. The reader can observe from the stream of consciousness point of view that the narrator, referred to as Jane, is obviously facing many psychological problems. The storyline follows the narrator?s writings in her journal throughout a period of time as she slowly loses her mind, and struggles for freedom, while she becomes infatuated with the yellow wallpaper. The narrator explains that she sees a woman trapped behind bars in the wallpaper, which symbolizes how Jane is feeling at this point. Jane claims to be able to literally smell the wallpaper everywhere she goes now as if it haunts her. The narrator?s stay in the house is dwindling down and she finally decides she must tear the wallpaper off the walls to release the girl from the bars. By the end of her journal, the narrator has convinced herself that she is actually the woman from the walls. On their last day, Jane locked herself into the room so she could tear off the rest of the wallpaper. When John finally gets into the room, the narrator says, ?I've got out at last, in spite of you and Jane. And I've pulled off most of the paper, so you can't put me back!? John then faints, and the journal ends. The narrator now exclaims that she is finally free, however she is actually the complete opposite.
