The Chinese immigrants came to America beginning in 1849, shortly after the California Gold Rush, and ended abruptly with the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which made it illegal for the Chinese to immigrate between the 1880s and the 1920s . The main reason why the Chinese came to America was that they had economic hardships due to the growing British dominance over China after Britain defeated China in the Opium War of 1839-1842. One of the government restrictions was the Immigration Act of 1924. This act limited the number of immigrants allowed to enter the United States through a national origins quota. It provided immigration visas to two percent of the total number of people of each nationality in the US as of the 1890 national census. This act shows segregation because, it completely excludes the immigrants from Asia. The Immigration Act of 1924 did not affect the groups of immigrants discussed earlier besides the fact that if there were too many Irish people, Jewish people, Chinese people or any other nationality trying to come into the United States than they wouldn’t be able to come in.
