Chris McCandless was a man who left lasting impressions on those who he met on his journey. Jan and her boyfriend Bob, and Ronald Franz were people who Chris made a lasting impression on. Chris wanted to go into the wild alone and not have any relationships when he did it, by doing so Chris made friends and left impressions by trying not to. Chris being the man who wanted to escape the world and those in it, made lasting relationships with others by wanting to escape and by reminding them of the families they don't get to be around. In a letter Chris received from Jan she told him that he was always welcome(Krakauer 43). This letter represents the adjacency created between the couple and Chris. They hadn't spoken in a year and a half but Jan still said that Chris is welcome anytime. He was smart but sometimes he could make me mad(Krakauer 46). Jan and Bob were both very fond of Chris, especially Jan. Jan has already lost her son and wasn't in contact with him, so when she met Chris she started to think of him as her own son Jan was always looking out for Chris whether it was from feeding him, and taking care of him, to buying the necessities for his journey, she was always there for him.He made a long lasting impression on the couple because he reminded Jan of the son she didn't talk to anymore. He's gone and I want someone to take care of him(Krakauer 45). Although Chris was not her own son Jan still wanted him to be watched over. Especially because she believed that her own son was not being properly watched over. Jan wanted to help take care of Chris because she thought of Chris as a son of her own, this was one of the reasons why Chris made an impression on Jan and Bob because he reminded them of her son. Chris made a lasting relationship with Jan and Bob, something he didn't plan to do when he first started his adventure this is what caused him to leave an impression because it wasn't what he planned to do.
