Christina Rossetti Influences

Following the pre-Raphaelite period, Christina Rossetti features many of the popular aspects in the arts surrounding in her own poems. Akin to numerous other poets of the era, Rossetti presented strong amorous themes of passion and often subtle indications to Religion. Her most recognisable work is from the ‘Goblin Market and Other Poems’ anthology which was released in 1862. The collection was Rossetti’s first published selection of poetry and includes poems such as Goblin Market, Echo, Maude Clare and Shutout. Prior to this she began her literature career in 1848, the first two poems from Rossetti were published in the Athenaeum, an English Literary Magazine published in London from 1828 to 1921. Despite suffering from multiple illness’ in the last couple decades of her life she continued producing work, be that fiction and non-fiction. She is also remembered through people she has influenced since her death. Her style of writing can be seen in their writing or even the types of themes she used are projected onto the young and aspiring poets. For example great authors such as Ford Maddox Ford, Virginia Woolf, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Elizabeth Jennings and Phillip Larkin all took note from her work and were though roughly inspired. Even though her death may have risen her popularity, she still didn’t reach the standard of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. In the early 20th century her work became even less notable as modernism was on the rise. However as the 1970’s came along, an increasing amount of academics began to critique her work in order to look behind the allegory she was fond of creating.
