Christopher Columbus was born in 1451. He first went to sea at the age of fourteen, and shipwrecked near the Portuguese coast in 1476. In 1492 Columbus got permission from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to act as patrons. Many times prior to finally agreeing, they had denied Columbus many times. Columbus promised to bring back gold, spices, and silks from the Far East, he promised to spread Christianity, and lead an expedition to China. This caused King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to reconsider and provide Columbus with money and ships for his voyage. The voyage was financed by seven noble Genovese banker residents in Seville. He leaves Palos, Spain and plans to cross the Atlantic Ocean in search of a new wrote to the Indies on his ship, the Santa Maria, in August. Fernando, his son, was also on board the Santa Maria. Martin Alonso Pinzon commanded the Niña, and Vicente Yanez Pinzon commanded the Pinta. The Admiral asked and admonished the men to keep a good look out for land; and to him who should first cry out that he saw land he would give a silk doublet. Sailors seen a light and was skeptical if it indicated land was near. The early morning of October 12th the ships landed on an island in present day, The Bahamas, and named it San Salvador.
