Clarisse In Fahrenheit 451

Decent Essays
Clarisse McClellan and Mildred Montag are both citizens living under the dystopian society of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In the epigraph written by Spanish poet Juan Ramon Jimenez reads, “If they give you ruled paper, write the other way.” This means when faced with opposition, insurrection, the act of revolting against the government, should be considered. Both Clarisse and Mildred are antithetical characters which reveal the distinctive ideology among the wide spectrum of society. Clarisse is a 17 year old girl who lies on the greater half of the gamut in the society meaning she is more rebelling -- or rather disapproving towards the established government.

The first force the author, Ray Bradbury, used in the story was a woman burning with her house because she hid books. Montag was one of the firemen who was sent to take the woman away and burn her house and her possessions; however, he and his co-workers did not accomplish their goal due to the woman taking her own life. When Montag told Mildred, his wife, what he had done, he said, “ ‘We burned a thousand books. We burned a woman’ ”…

Bradbury uses Clarisse to describe how the common people behave in the novel. Their world is the exact same everyday, containing the same meaningless phrases that people say for no reason other than to socialize. No one can mention anything else but these phrases that they are given, because their lives are so bland that there is really nothing else to add. With this, Clarisse is hinting at how tedious the world now is due to the fact that there are no books or ideas going around for people to contemplate about. This simply states that no one can say anything else, because no one knows anything else.…

As we know Clarisse is still very young, she may not have experienced everything this negative world has to give yet, like Mildred might of. Clarisse is still pure and innocent; she is described “Her face was slender and milk-white, and in it was a kind of gentle hunger that touched over everything with tireless curiosity. The novel documents Montag’s transition from a willful, unknowing member of the proletariat to someone who is aware and resistful of his role in society.
