After taking the Clifton Strengths assessment and submitting my responses, the results showed that my top five strengths were competition, empathy, individualization, futuristic, and relator. While I no longer play any sports, my competitiveness still drives me and many aspects of my everyday life. Whether it's as simple as playing a board game or something difficult like giving a speech in class, in everything I do I always want to be the best. Both my second and third strengths, empathy and individualization, showed my love and ability to work with others. Being empathetic towards others is something I take very serious. Through experience I’ve learned that the most successful way to lead and work with others is by forming relationships. While working at a retail store I noticed that most people including myself are more inclined to work harder for a manager that they have a strong relationship with rather than someone who is seen as simply just a boss. That is why I always try to treat others with the same empathy that I would expect them to treat me with. Every decision I make I try to consider how it will affect my future whether it be long term or short term. By doing this it has helped me to not make poor decisions or do something I will regret. Being a 19-year-old college student there are plenty of opportunities to make a dumb decision that could negatively affect the rest of your life but there are also many opportunities to make decisions to positively impact my future and knowing the difference is vital. Having a futuristic mindset allows me to maintain motivation at times when others might not because I realize how the little things I’m doing today may lead to bigger things tomorrow. Finally, just like empathy and individualization my fifth strength, Relator, deals with my relationships with others. While forming relationships is key to successfully working with others, it is important to me that these relationships are mutually genuine. I am a firm believer that the people you associate yourself with determine the type person that you become. That is why it is important to build strong relationships with good people who can create a positive impact on your life. During the early part of my teenage years I had a large group of friends, many of which whom where very bad influences. More and more I began to find myself in bad situations because I was following the poor decision of those who I thought were my friends.
