What a fantastic and wonderful experience to be able to see what lies ahead of me in my nursing education; Two weeks ago I got to observe an upper division lab about administering intramuscular injections. It was especially exciting since my friend Elizabeth was one of the students nurses participating the lab and I was able see her give her first intramuscular injection! Being able to observe this lab was another confirmation that nursing is what I am I meant to be studying. It always meaningful to get that kind of encouragement and confirmation.

Before even looking at the orders for a specific patient, the nurses looked at the patient records to determine general information about the patient as well as any important factors such as any allergies and the reason behind their hospital visit. Then the nurses looked at their orders to see what medications, if any, they were to administer. After finding the medication, they looked up what the medication was used to treat and if it would cause any allergic reactions. Verifying that the medication was appropriate for the symptoms or illness the patient had, the nurses would then verify the dose and where the injection should go. This shows the nurses use of evidence-based practice and critical thinking as well as looking out for patient safety. Once they were ready to enter the patient’s room, they were very polite and respected the patients privacy by knocking and introducing themselves to the patient. As they were preparing to administer the medication, they talked to the patient about what they were doing and why. They also verified 2 identifiers with the patient while verifying that with their patient bracelet. Anjie talked about the importance of this on Monday and making sure that you give the correct medicine to the correct patient. This is another way to ensure patient
