The election of our nation’s first black president was a triumph, but the narrative of racial progress it implied was in many ways a misleading one.” Coates article shows how clear the past can fold into the present and the future. Slavery was just the beginning but even after it ended, white supremacists will always find a way to keep black people down. “Two hundred fifty years of slavery. Ninety years of Jim Crow. Sixty years of separate but equal. Thirty-five years of racist housing policy. Until we reckon with our compounding moral debts, America will never be whole.” Whenever one tribulation ends, they find another different way to keep black people down. We need to work against this, to finally create freedom for ourselves. Knowing everything about our history is a wakeup call to look at what is happening around you, to your brothers and sisters everywhere. As a whole we need to work against looking down upon each other because of situations white people presented minorities with and finally as a whole we can be
