Okay, despite the fact that I kind of dislike it whenever one of my favorite songs goes 'mainstream', I do think Clean Bandit's 'Rockabye' deserves the success and fair recognition it's having now. From the first time I heard that song, I've always thought the lyrics are insanely unique from all the other pop songs you hear on the radio (and internet) and I just love how it's about single moms' struggles in parenting. It's an issue many don't talk about and I think it matters.  So…

The other day I was walking around Kingston and noticed a woman walking next to a man who was wearing a shirt reading “I’m With Stupid ---->” (with the arrow pointing straight at the woman.) I chortled momentarily, and it made me think about this impending essay about the cup of Nestor found in Pithicusaean tomb. Would archaeologists one day uncover this shirt and create an intense academic discussion as to the meaning of this phrase, and whether it was intended as a joke or as a serious warning (“Beware! This person’s intelligence is below average! Please refrain from discussing Freud, Nietzsche and Baudrillard with said individual!”)…

The story Victory Lap by George Saunders is ambiguous and has many unexpected twists. Through the characters’ thoughts, it is revealed that who they appear to be isn’t always who they turn out to be. The story starts off slightly confusing, as it begins in the mind of Alison Pope. The first few paragraphs suggest that the story is about a young girl pretending to be a princess, until her thoughts change to her dance recital, then to her family, and many other things. It then becomes clear that Alison Pope is a young, teenage girl who has a lot of thoughts running through her head at any moment in the day.…
