My Life in Music

The aching pain vibrating in my chest is a constant reminder that in about thirty seconds I will be singing to more than seven thousand people. The sweat sliding down my forehead makes me realize how nervous I am. My lips are about to sing the beautiful italian words from the song, “Nel Cor Piu Non Mi Sento” written by the famous author Giovanni Paisiello. Every performance, prior to performing I am in this constant state. It is what I like to call, “the state of the unknown”. It is the not knowing on how high my performance will be. To calm the waves of anxiety in my heart I can only do one thing, which is to close my eyes and block everyone and everything

An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

As my life has shifted and changed for the past nine years, I have been stressed and anxious too many times to count. For a while, I couldn’t find a source of relief that I could fall back on, so I quickly became overwhelmed and fell apart. I didn’t realize this at the time, but I had been neglecting my life line. I had forgotten how much piano had meant to me and how much it helped me.…

The unique opportunities and skills that music offers are essential. These skills include “creative thinking… collaboration… the ability to listen” and “the power to focus on the present and the future simultaneously” (Lipman, 2013, para. 4). Although these are all skills that can be developed in other activities, music is an effective way to practice all of these skills over years of practice. The appeal to pathos that Lipman uses is that she appeals to the fear of missing out. Her argument is strengthened through the argument that those who do not practice music during their life miss out on such great qualities such as “creative thinking” and…

I express my creativity through singing. For as long as my family and I can remember, I have loved to sing. In elementary school, I was always the shy and quiet type, but when I went to choir practice after school, I felt like I really belonged somewhere. But as much as I love to sing, I wasn't always good at it. At choir practice, I always sang as loud as I could, sometimes to the dismay of my choir director.…

Ever since I can remember I have been preoccupied with music. As a child I remember obsessing over my dad's CD collection and spending lengthy afternoons just listening to them with him. Growing up, I was immersed in what service looks like in a music classroom. I was first taught this through my mother, an elementary music teacher, by her selfless example of giving her students what they deserve in her classroom and beyond. I have witnessed this also in my band and choir directors, and in many of my professors at Southeast. I wanted to be able to give students what I was given. For this reason, I became a vocal music education major.…

I learned to believe that if you believe that you can do something and work toward it you can do it. I learned this during my freshman year in marching band when I switch from tuba to front ensemble. Although it was hard to do and took a lot of work but was worth it in the end. At the end of eighth grade I had a huge decision on whether to stick with the tuba or do what I want and join the front ensemble (pit).…

Growing up in inner city Baltimore was not easy at all. I have seen so many horrifying things at such a young age. Countless times I have seen crackheads slumped over like zombies walking throughout the neighborhoods I called home. I have been to countless memorial services, vigils, and funerals for people who were senselessly murdered in the streets. I have even been grazed by a stray bullet during a routine drive-by while playing in my front yard.…

I learned the need to work well in advance of the deadline. Musical details may be different than academic details, but just as slight differences in tone and pitch can completely change the music’s meaning, every detail, regardless of how small, matters in all subjects. Whether it’s a math problem or a novel, my heightened attention to detail helps me to better identify the correct steps or the overall theme. As high-school progressed it became more and more evident that relying on natural abilities doesn’t equate to achieving…

People and music are inseparable as Macdonald (2008, 39) argues that ‘We are all musical. Every human being has a biological, social and cultural guarantee of musicianship.’ It is hardly possible to live without hearing music in daily life, and people has been building musical identity since they are born by negotiating through it. Thus, music is a significant matter in personal identity and analysis of one’s life can reveal one’s musical identity. This essay will demonstrate the analysis of my musical identity based on my life.…

I first gained an interest in music in elementary school music class. After playing recorders and learning about the history of music, I was inspired to learn as many different instruments as possible. I began piano lessons in third grade, and started learning cornet a year later. After many years of attending music camps, playing in school and church bands, joining marching band and drumline, and experimenting on my own, I have grown immensely as a musician. My main instruments are trumpet/cornet, piano, marimba, and ukulele.…
