Compare And Contrast A Lesson Before Dying And The Green Mile

Martin Luther King Jr. show many times of him being a hero of dignity. One especially during his march where he and 50,000 other black and white protestors marched from Salem to Alabama’s capital Montgomery. This march was one of the most violent given the nickname, Bloody Sunday. The protesters were met by state troopers and were sprayed by fire hoses, attacked by vicious dogs and had poisonous gas thrown at them. While all of that was going on Martin Luther King Jr. still stayed calm and did not fight back. In the book A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, and the movie The Green Mile the two main characters are put in similar situations where they have to stand up and show that they are strong. Grant shows he is a hero of dignity when he is at Henri Pichot’s house and Henri and 3 other men including the sheriff were deciding on if Grant could go and visit Jefferson in his cell and Inez asks him a question “You want to sit down? She still did not look at me. I’m alright, I don’t mind standing.”(pg.43) This proves that Grant is a hero just like MLK because he is showing that he doesn’t need any of a different mans things for himself, just like MLK standing up for his rights. that he could stand and wait as long as it takes them to decide. Another example that shows Grant is a hero of dignity is that when the guards at the prison would check everything that Grant was bringing in every time “We went through the usual routine. I had to take everything out of my pockets and put it all back. The deputy went through all the food, unwrapping one piece of chicken, checking it, putting it back.“(Pg.81) This shows Grant has Dignity just like MLK because he is letting it happen and he knows if he tries anything that he will get in big trouble so he just lets it happen. Grant showed dignity when he was talking to Jefferson in his cell and Jefferson was telling Grant how he has done his job of making him a man “Goodbye mr Wiggins tell them I’m strong tell them I’m a man” (pg.234) This shows Grant is hero of dignity just like MLK because just like him he showed that nothing can get in his way of helping …show more content…
One of Martin Luther King’s biggest movement was the Montgomery bus boycott. The protest that MLK started was a protest against racial segregation on the public transits. This protest started after Rosa Parks sat on the front of a bus. The day after MLK proposed a city wide protest of the public transit system. This shows how MLK is a hero of dignity and can impact one city to change the way segregation treats blacks. He also had many marches for different things like voting, Jobs and freedom. One of his biggest marches was the March on Washington, it rallied 250,000 people to march for jobs and freedom and political injustice. At the end of this march he spoke on the Lincoln memorial and said “our little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” In this march and many others MLK did not turn to violence but instead peaceful protest. This shows that MLK is a hero of dignity because he did not fight back when things got violent he told his protestors to remain
