Compare And Contrast Elkton House Vs River House

Improved Essays
My family recently purchased a vacation house on the Bohemia River in addition to our other house. There are numerous similarities and differences between the two houses. Both houses have their advantages depending on what time of year it is. There are many differences that make them unique and special to me. The river house is better than our Elkton house because of all the activities, the amount of free time at each, and the atmospheres. The houses are similar because of the flaws, family time, and fond memories. The options for things to do at either house differ significantly. There isn’t much to do at the Elkton house during week days. I eat, do my homework, and sleep. On the weekend, it is a completely different place. Since a lot of …show more content…
At the Elkton house I am constantly working on something, whether it is for school or something extracurricular. Weekdays are spent in a constant frenzy of school work and sports. There is never time for me to just lie down and do nothing. Even when I feel like I’ve caught up, there is always another job to do. The time between homework and school is when I sleep. Depending on the night I get six or seven hours of sleep. At the river house, there is always free time. Occasionally, a chore like mowing the lawn or making my bed comes up, but those tasks can easily be put aside. I rarely bring homework to the house because I know that I won't do it. If there is nothing to do, I will go fishing to pass the …show more content…
Each house has tiny blemishes that make it unique. The shower in the Elkton house whistles; it is annoying, but I would miss it if it ever went away. In my room at the river house, the fan light constantly burns out and leaves me in the dark. Even when it is working, I turn on my phone flash light, so I don't trip over anything. Family makes a house a home. While my brother is at college, my mom and dad are all the only ones around that are constantly looking out for me. Neither house would mean anything without them. My parents raised me; all of the free time not working is because of the hard work they put in throughout their lives. I light up when I walk into my house because they are there. Lastly, both houses have memories. They might be unique to the place, but that does not change the significance. I love all the times I went out wake boarding with my friends or family at the river house. At the Elkton house, I enjoy all the times my friends and I go down to the pond. Both houses are important to me in many ways. My house in Elkton and my river house are different because of what we do their, the amount of down time, and the feel of each one. There are similarities, too. Both aren't perfect, have family, and are full of lifelong memories. I would not be who I am as a person without the consistency of the normal house and the endless possibilities of the river house. Both are a big part of

Constructing Place Distinction In what follows I document permanent residents’ and second homeowners’ parallel construction of place distinction. Both groups tend to agree on what lends meaning to Rangeley; both call upon the rural idyll—that rural life is simple, virtuous, and different from urban life—to explain what makes Rangeley distinct (Woods, 2011). While this, itself, is not particularly surprising, given the enduring narratives of rural life (Williams 1974; Hummon, 1990; Bell, 1994; Woods, 2005, 2011), what is of particular interest is how both view second homeowners—who are not, themselves, rural—not as a problematic exogenous force, but as a marker of what makes Rangeley distinct and as assurance of its worth. Both groups celebrate…

When a person thinks of a house, they usually tend to think of a family living together, a place to feel safe and loved, and, most importantly, a sense of belonging. In The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, a young girl by the name of Esperanza moves to a new house and progressively grows up and matures there. The name of the book itself fits in because it is a part of Esperanza’s roots, she has emotions towards the house, and it is a part of her memory as she grows up. First and foremost, a home is a part of a person’s roots. The three sisters had to remind Esperanza of who she is.…

Two books. Two different plots and ideas. But there are similarities among the sea of differences. Both of these books have the common idea of the house, or a spirit in the house, being an important part of the story, even though it is not necessarily in the category of antagonist or protagonist. Today, I will compare two books with many differences and make a verdict on which is better in my opinion.…

That’s right, I said it! If you read the title, then you would know that I, Liberty Rockhold, just called Illinois the worst state ever! Now I could start listing the reasons why, no capital punishment, taxes, and Chicago are only a few, but I’ll save you the time. Instead, I’m just going to talk about the first part of the title, the move. Me ranting over why Illinois is a horrible state, or me telling the story of when I moved to this horrid state.…

21st-century homeowners may not know it, but their houses have been reformed over the past 2000 years. Today, houses are seen as the bigger and fancier, the more wealthy the owners must be. Back in ancient Rome, this was the same case. If someone was in the upper class and a wealthy freedman, they may have been found living in a domus and the poor lived in insulaes. Detail isn’t very important in today’s homes because many houses are manufactured and use the same materials to have a simpler look.…

The houses were meant to seem as if they were rising out of the natural landscape of the Midwest, thus their name. Not just the exterior fit in to its environment, however, as the interior was also very reminiscent of the open scene. Wallpaper With a Thousand Words “The Yellow Wallpaper” is an important story, but digging has to be done to see so. The author Charlotte Perkins displays a feminist interpretation in an impressive way. Her use of metaphors brings out the true meaning behind this story. The wallpaper represents the way women are treated in our society, and the author tells a story of a “madwoman” to represent this overall theme. The house is the whole backbone to the story and is a one of the metaphors used.…

Most of the dissimilarities, I believe, contribute to the form being apart of the site. The windows, floor plans, and places of construction allow the Farnsworth house to be more apart of nature than the Eames house. The Farnsworth house is simply constructed of large clear windows allowing all of the natural light in, un-obscured. In the Eames house, most of the glass panels on the exterior walls being painted or frosted. This obscures views and filters the way natural light enters the house, much unlike the Farnsworth house.…

MagnetMom complains about how her daughter’s homework takes away her beneficial sleep. With busy families, like hers, they have many after school activities, so when they get home, they do not have time for too much homework. She says that the reality of it is that they are an active family. For active families, homework causes sleep deprivation and takes away the children’s energy they need for the next day. (“How Homework Affects Families”, pg. 1).…
