Though there are a manifold of symbols throughout the short story, one that stands out is the black box. The black box dates back decades, it is considerably older than the oldest man in the village and is so old that some of the original rituals that go along with it have been forgotten. The box itself is a part of their way of life, so doing away with it, like other towns have, would make them look like a “pack of crazy fools” according to some townspeople. Elton Gahr mentions that “this box is a symbol because it is one of the only connections to the origin of the lottery...you can not question a tradition once it has moved beyond reason to simply the way things are done” (Garh 19). The black box also adds illogical loyalty to the story on how it blinds people from what they are doing to their fellow villagers.
