Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean love story that has spread throughout the world and has been interpreted in many different ways. this presentation will be analysing the scene known as the first brawl and how it is has been interpreted differently by Franco Zeffirellis movie and Bas Luhrmann’s.
The Major Difference between these two movies is the story setting. Traditionally Romeo and Juliet is set in an Elizabethan town known as Verona, this setting can be seen in Franco Zeffirellis Movie While Bas Luhrmann’s story setting is a Fictional city known as “Verona Beach” (Los Angeles). In Franco Zeffirellis movie we are first introduced to the fighting between servants from the affluent Montague and Capulet households. Samson begins a brawl between the Montagues and Capulets by flicking his thumbnail from behind his upper teeth which is an insulting gesture known as biting the thumb. His juvenile and vulgar actions cause the fighting because he wants to get into a fight with the Montagues but doesn’t want to be accused of starting the fight by making an explicit insult. Because of his timidity, he settles for being annoying rather than challenging. The thumb-biting, as an essentially meaningless gesture, represents the foolishness of the entire Capulet/Montague feud and the stupidity of violence in general.
In conclusion the First brawl scene Shows Many of the Gestures and Attitudes that are taken through the fighting of the two families and how the directors have interpreted them or changed them to mean something to their audience it also shows how stupid the feuding between the two families is and how it not only affects them but also the people surrounding
