During the Holocaust, Anne Frank once wrote, “Where there’s hope there’s life. It fills us with courage and makes us strong again”. This hopefulness is one of the reasons Anne Frank from “The Diary of Anne Frank” and Eva Benitez from “Freedom Writers” have much in common even though they may have lived half a century apart from each other. Both of these people were powerful young women who found ways to overcome their situation, though it may be difficult when others are not doing the right thing. Their triumphs show that anyone can make it through a tough situation. “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “Freedom Writers” both emphasize that tragic situations can change people for the positive.

Anne later says in her diary that her mother has not even really been an influence on her and her life. This is also similar to how Eva in “Freedom Writers” is treated by her family. Eva’s mother is also not a very positive influence. Eva’s family is struggling to get by and her mother even tells her to lie if it will make her life easier or help her get by, like the situation where Eva has to go and testify against her boyfriend in court. Even though Anne and Eva are born into families where their mothers may not be able to help them through life very well, they both grow and therefore become more independent because of it. While Eva and Anne’s relationships with their families may be similar, they choose to do very different things with their lives to get through their tragic situations.
