Other corporations would have building designs that reflect property protection, continuity protection, environment protection, or historical protection depending on the use of the structure. One way a building can be built with an emphasis on life safety into the design to install an aid for “guests’ means of becoming aware of the fire, and the time of their fire awareness” to assist in the safety of their guests lives (Bryan). The most common fire awareness aid is for the hotels to install a fire sprinkler system throughout the entire hotel whether or not the space will be occupied by guests. Rooms such as the electrical room and storage rooms, where guest are not occupying, still are to be sprinklered and protected in the design phase. Other systems involved in the awareness of fire and timing of their awareness for guests would be the manual fire alarms and fire extinguishers. Both systems are vital in an emergency situation so the occupants of the hotel become aware of the danger. How the occupants respond and react to their awareness is what causes danger and misfortune to the remaining …show more content…
The safety designed also needs to extend towards and include the lives of the emergency responders such as firefighters and emergency medical services. Hotels have always been a concern for guests so when “professional fire fighters… participated in rescuing hotel guest confined” in areas of a burning hotel, the concern has only grown into to design phase to help protect all (Hytten). The reasons occupants get confined or stuck in a building is due to deficiency of design or just again going back to the character and behavior of the individual themselves theoretically getting trapped in their own panic and emotional reaction. The stress of the fire can typically play a role is the behavior of the fire fighters as well, especially when they know of the patients that are in dire need of their assistance. “Obstructions to evacuation and the type of assistance provided” during the guest evacuation process play a role in the design of future hotels (Bryan). Assistance that some occupants require while evacuating would be an alarm that not only makes noise but will speak instructions in the case of a hard of hearing guest trying to evacuate. Other occupants can be obstructions as well for both guests and emergency responders struggling to get to the heart of the emergency while floundering guests are simply wondering aimlessly in panic.
