For this project I observed the head coach for Garland High School’s cross country team. Coach Lynn Duyck is coaching for her 35th year the girl’s varsity and junior varsity cross country team. She has a total of 36 runners, 10 who are varsity and 26 who are junior varsity. The runners are between the ages 14-18. Her fastest runner Gemma is a freshman, following her is Isabelle who is a senior.…
My Cross Country/Track coach is one of the best men I know. He not only betters his runners by teaching us, but he also runs with us. Pushing us to greatness with words of encouragement, he implores us to leave all energy on the course/track and teaches us to be exceptional people outside of running. He expresses to us that no matter what we do, he will always be proud of each member of the team; therefore, our actions can’t change his love for us. That’s why it was devastating when he told us before the past track season, that he would not be able to coach for the remainder of the running season from February until we initiated winter conditioning November.…
The schools have taken advantage of these student athletes who are uncertain of their future. A survey conducted by a professor from University of North…
The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…
Kobe runs up and down the court like a cheetah, dribbling the ball, shooting threes, taking layups, practically playing with the other team. The crowd is cheering louder than a plane taking off the runway, and all eyes are on Kobe. Then, all of a sudden, he feels a searing pain in his thigh. He just tore his hamstring, and he knew it immediately.…
During track season, my seventh grade basketball coach thought that it would be a great idea if I joined the track team and competed in the 400 meter event. I attended every practice and I was motivated and convinced that I could win first place. However, on the first track meet that I attended, I was in last place. I was so far behind that the girl in first place passed me up.…
The average student athlete practices more hours in a week, than an average person would work in a week. Student athletes have to be up for early morning workouts throughout the week. Also right after the workouts student athletes would have to go right to class for the day. After their long day of classes athletes would head right into their long and tiring practice. After their long and tiring practice the players would lead into the late night film sessions.…
Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…
College Athletes Should Get Paid Big name college athletes as in, Terrelle Pryor, Johnny Manziel, Jameis Winston, and most recently Todd Gurley were fined and suspended for signing autographs or selling their autographs for money. College athletes should get paid enough to buy clothes, food, supplies, and that money could come from getting a piece of money made off of their merchandise. Some college athletes have no money to support themselves in college. College athletes should be paid because of the amount of time themselves and the school put into practicing or playing games, more students would stay in college instead of leaving to the pros for money, the money that the NCAA has available, and the student athletes do not get any share of money or benefits when anything with their name or number gets sold.…
“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen” (Michael Jordan). Teams consist of multiple roles including leaders, starters, and supporters who all contribute and are vital to the success of the team. Athletes who are willing to put in extra time and effort earn main roles on the team. Meanwhile, positive teammates who may not be as athletically gifted or old enough to play in a starring position, make the team to fulfill a supporting role throughout the season. The starters, main players, supporters, and even bench warmers are important to the success of the team.…
"If these young men and women are going to come in and put in 30, 40, 50 hours, the least we can give them is a set of circumstances academically that really allows them to benefit educationally from what they have put into the athletics…
Moreover, these supporters maintain that college athletes usually miss a number of classes when athletic tournaments commences up to the finals, which are televised nationally every year. In addition, participating in athletics enable students to attain certificates of participation, which adds value to their resume, and this can enable them to be considered during interviews for various job opportunities (Rodriguez 12-21). Others argue that students who participate in college athletics may realize their realize that they talented in athletics, and may be absorbed by the nation in order to represent it in the international competitions, thereby, earning more than they could have earned if they concentrated with…
High school sports teach time management in many ways. For example, “If you know you’ll miss class/test or assignment because of sports, talk with your teacher earlier rather than later to ensure you cover all of your academic bases,” (Keeping). Sometimes students must leave early for a sport and may miss a class. Teachers will not chase those students around trying to figure out what work they have missed, it is up to the student to make up the work. Also, “If your teacher gives you advanced notice on tests, projects or book assignments…do a little each day rather than cramming everything the night before it is due,” (Keeping).…
