Geographical locations of the country which you live in are important to know. Geography is a link between the social sciences and the hard sciences. Geography teaches you a whole range of skills that can be used in your continuing academic learning and future careers. The skills that Geography teaches you, include; data collection, manipulation, presentation and analysis, essay writing, reading maps, annotating and being able to give formal oral presentations. A student was once asked to label Ohio on the map, and instead on pointing out where Ohio was the student answered “somewhere west of the Mississippi.” Half of the students which were asked questions were only able answer such basic questions with only the thinnest recital of facts, many couldn’t answer them at all. Another student was asked “Where did Lafollette come from?” the student replied vaguely “Somewhere out west.” According to Straight and Nation Geographic Society “Even Harvard students are fumbling to recollect the name of Canada’s capital city. When it came to their own country, 54 percent could not locate New York State on a U.S. map; 25 percent were not able to place the Gulf of Mexico; and six percent of the young people could not even find their own country on a world map.” These two statements from Straight and Nation Geographic Society reveal that the current …show more content…
The knowledge gained through education increases an individual’s chances of success. Students in the current generation are failing to understand that education is the key to success, and technology is to be blamed in this case. Technology now encouragers narcissistic blabbering, video, and PowerPoint, replacing writing & communication skills. Texting online all the time, and typing all types of work online is taking away the writing skills from students because anything which is misspelt will be corrected itself and all types of grammar mistakes will be corrected on their own as well. This is decreasing the students’ knowledge because the students really have no idea of what they are spelling correct and what they are spelling incorrect, and when it comes to writing in class, the students work has a lot of careless mistakes. As Thompson says “I think were in the midst of a literacy revolution the likes of which we haven’t seen since Greek civilization.” Clive Thompson is trying to get her point across saying that students don’t have the literacy knowledge which is required, and that technology is fading away our reading and writing skills. Students are now used to exact answers of what the question is rather than looking at the text and trying to find the answer, without realizing in the real world, you will never find an easy way
