The problem I would like to work on for my CPC paper is concerning ELL students. You are teaching in a public school with a large number of ELL (English Language Learners) in your classroom. When these students are trying to complete reading assignments, they seem to have to translate English words back to the language they speak at home to understand the meaning of a sentence. Because of this, it takes them longer to read and as a result, they sometimes forget what they have read in the previous sentences and find it hard to understand the whole paragraph. Once they get lost in reading, it becomes very difficult for them to pay attention and follow your direction. The american school system can quickly overwhelm a student that does not speak English as their first language. Growing up I went to a small school where there was not much diversity. I did not see the importance of a second language until I worked at an elementary school in LPS my first year of college. Teachers are interacting across cultures in a way they never did before. Having a student that does not speak English at home may not have the support or see the importance of learning English. Translating words back and forth can be very confusing to a student that is new to English, let alone all the phrases and slang used in today’s culture. If I child is not getting the proper support at home it makes it extra difficult to communicate with parents and decide what is best for the
