Nowadays, when a police officer gets involve in a shooting, peoples perception is skewed by the media and overall opinions. How many times do we see in the news, police officers shot a 15 year old kid carrying a toy gun? The media tends to focus on the headlines that would give them more viewers instead of the totality of the event. Robert Rangel, author of “The Red Dot Club,” wrote the book on the perception of police officers and what they felt, when they were involve in a shooting. The effects of militarizing the police can be seen through police brutality during the War on Terror, including today. Much like the emphasis placed on survival, America’s police academy must take much of the blame for the militaristic attitude. As Matthew Harwood of the ACLU went on to point out that the police seems to have lost its community aspect. In addition, the main way police departments recruit new members is by “attracting young men with the promise of Army-style adventure and high-tech toys.” Instead of distancing themselves from this military image, police departments are embracing it, which will only worsen police brutality.…

One of the police commitments that were acknowledge was to insure they maintained the community’s trust in the manner police operate and apprehend criminals. Unfortunately, as time goes by the community’s trust in the police has started to vanish as people start to detect the glitches in their method of practice. For instance, the way they deal with criminals and victims, the delay in responding to reported violation, the unmasked of the institutional discrimination and racial animosity toward offenders and victims. These aspects revealed by the media in general are some reasons why law enforcement agencies are the subject of harsh denunciation and the loss of the community’s trust. These issues are most of the time resulted from miscommunication…

The role of this research was to establish a thorough understanding of police corruption. This is different than the literature review in that we want the public opinion on police corruption. The most effective way to find out about the opinions on police corruption was a combination of surveying and interviewing different persons. In addition to surveys and interviews, I used previous research that has been completed, that was found on ICPSR.…
The article I came across was very interesting to say the least. Six small town California officers were arrested for the heinous acts of corruption, bribery, embezzlement, and conspiracy. In the small rural town these officers were preying on the poor predominantly Latinos impounding their cars and when they could not afford to get them out they would sell the cars, and also use them for their own personal use. The officers which included a former chief whom had previously went missing from work for months and returned upon announcing that he would retire and the current chief along with several Sergeants, a brother, and the tow company owner. Several officers claimed they did no wrong but proof says otherwise, and since the small town police…
Even during this period, the officers are governed by the department’s policies, which are developed to reinforce the required ethics and standards associated with the position. As very well put by the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), “Police integrity and ethics are fundamental to effective policing and help build trust within communities. Sound conduct by police improves community interactions, enhances communication, and promotes shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder (COPS, n.d.). As they look at the issue from an organizational strategy standpoint, they have to include all aspects of the organization.…

On the other hand, due to the size of the LAPD and the size of the population of the Los Angeles, the LAPD has weaknesses too. For an example, the City of New York has over 40,000 sworn officers with approximately 305 square miles with the population of 8 million. Therefore, for the LAPD to be comparable to New York city, the LAPD should have a compliment of approximately additional of 10,000 officers. They do more tasks with fewer officers compare to the City of New York. Because of the low staffing, many police officers are required to work extensively over time hours.…
