Disasters have the grim ability of altering communities, not only physically, but also mentally, psychologically, emotionally, and socially- whether they be manmade or natural. The immediate effects may include loss of life and damage to property and infrastructures, with survivors traumatized by the experience, uncertain of the future, and typically less able to provide for their own welfare. While many communities experience social resilience, the capacity of social groups and communities to recover or respond positively to crisis, many communities never regain the sense of community they experienced prior to the disaster (Maguire & Hagan, 2007). Today, films like The Year the Earth Went Wild and 9/12: From Chaos to Community enlighten us…

As a wise woman once said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much". Humans who work together usually achieve more than those who work alone. One genius alone will not produce the same results as a group of geniuses together. Scott Russell Sanders explains that " We all need seasons of withdrawal from responsibility", but this does not mean that we can spend our entire life avoiding responsibility. In order for a society to succeed, all of its members must work together and each of these members must take responsibility.…

The world is filled with myriad communities. When we consider community, many of us might consider stereotypical small-town living; that is, everything is local, everyone knows your name, and interpersonal interactions are face-to-face. When we think of community, we think of knocking on the neighbor's door for a cup of sugar. We might also think of the Utopian-minded communities spread across the U.S., occupied by people who partake in communal meals, share a majority of their belongings, and work on large gardens together. According to Joseph (2002a), community is about cultural, racial, or spacial boundaries that separate 'us' from 'them' (Joseph, 2002a, p. 1).…
