“Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights”, which talks about the personal costs of covering and how people too often sacrifice authenticity in the interest of assimilation. He also talks about how covering is a form of assimilation. The ability to cover and to be authentic to one's identity in a world where change is happening everyday is possible. Change plays a very important role in this life that we live in today. Without change we are not able to explore our authentic self. The covering that we do now in the short term will help us “ fit into the mainstream” ( Yoshino 293), but the end results of covering will help us find our true identity. The covering that we do allows us to explore new culture that is set open to us. For us to further explore covering “ We must instead build a new civil rights paradigm on what draws us together rather than on what drives us apart. Because covering applies to us all, it provides an issue around which we can make common cause. This is the desire for authenticity, our common human wish to express ourselves without being impeded by unreasoning demand for conformity” (Yoshino 295). The civil rights that we have today do not protect us from being authentic so most people cover their identity to feel protected. To solve this issue that is brought upon us we all have to work together to find a solution to the problem. So even though we all are covering our independent ideas will come out as we find a solution to how our civil rights will protect
