Creative Writing Major Analysis

Decent Essays
Creative Writing Majors write critical analyses of books, which is also something that we do in DC American Literature. These analyses could be about the novel’s theme, symbolism or figurative language the novel uses or an analysis of one of the main characters and their motives. Creative Writing Majors also continue to work their novels, short stories, and poems that could possibly be as famous as the literature we’ll read in this class one day. They also analyze and critique the work of others. The major is heavily English-based and any credits that count as English credits will help me get ahead in my major.

When I was in 5th grade, I wrote a story for a class assignment, received it back, and then thought that I could publish that story one day and become an author. Today, I still want to become a published author and plan to be. I aspire to become a Creative Writing Major because I am serious about my stories and getting them published. I concentrate better and get more progress on my stories when I’m in an environment like school than I do at my house. I want to talk about and read other people’s writing and take away some ideas or techniques that I could use myself in my stories. I need to read other people’s stories and learn how to give and take constructive criticism so I can improve my own and eventually publish

Upon reading chapter 5 from Holdstein’s “Who says? The Writer’s Research” I found myself faced with a number of ideas I had been unfamiliar with. After thoroughly examining this chapter, I realized that previously, I hadn’t properly evaluated resources, which is a mistake I made as someone who gathers research and analyzes various ideas in my writing. Throughout this chapter, I took notice that I, as a writer, have three main responsibilities: conducting a thorough search for sources using the proper key words, carefully and meticulously, yet efficiently analyzing sources, and determining the rationality of a source. While these ideas may present themselves as challenging, as I had been previously unfamiliar with them, if I acquire the proper…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

You get better at any skill through practice, and creative writing prompts are a great way to practice writing… or so they say. I’m not a great writer, by any means, but I have always felt more comfortable writing non-fiction pieces, and I’d like to change that. I’d like to become more creative and work on finding my voice and hone my technical skills and to do that I decided to start a writing challenge with my mother. My father had gifted her a book called “500 Writing Prompts” and when I leafed through it, I thought some of the prompts sounded pretty interesting and not too seriously stated that I’d like to use some of them. Somehow this led to us coming up with a plan to do one prompt a week and exchange them for feedback.…

Writing Journal (Morning Pages) I chose morning pages as one of my three pieces for Seasaw because it was something that I had to do at least three times a week for several weeks and it made me appreciate how important writing is. I haven’t written in a journal in such a long time since everything I need to write down is through my computer, phone, or if I write something on the board in class. This is a great strategy to bring into the classroom because it allows students to write about anything they want, with no rules! This helped me teach writing in my 3rd grade class because I had students starting to write in the morning versus the afternoon (mainly because I had to do it) and they were able to write about anything that they wanted. Students seemed to like this idea because they didn’t have to write on a particular topic, like they were used to, but others had no clue what to write about so I had to write suggestions on the board that students could use as a guide.…

Reading and writing has always been a challenging subject for me and people assume that because I’m an honors student that I don’t struggle, but that’s just not the case. I used to approach every writing and reading project with a negative attitude because I wouldn’t know how to go about it: getting it started, what order, how much, and how to end it were the main problems I came across. And while I stumbled over structure, clarity, and getting the point across, my grammar and vocabulary I notice was rarely the issue. I knew what I wanted to say and how to say it most times, but translating my thoughts into understandable words, that’s where the real difficulty began. Writing is a form of communication and as we all know that’s something I’m…
