The Runners It was December 24, 2256, Caleb looked out of his window at the House, a light gray building that young boys stayed in for 14 years, at the morning sun and dew that had collected on the long grass overnight. He brushed his dirty blonde hair out of his sapphire blue eyes to see that all the boys around him had their light, gray smocks on. Caleb thought, “What a boring place.” He looked out of his small, dirt covered window and saw the short, white buildings that he and his friends had called home for the past 14 years. A bell rang out, and all the boys started walking towards the center of the large community. This was ritual everyone had done since the Hemingway’s, the treacherous rulers of their once great society, became …show more content…

Suddenly two guards appeared behind Caleb and Peyton. “What do you think you two are doing?” one guard asked Caleb.
“We are trying to leave the society because I believe it is unfair to live in,” Caleb responded defiantly.
“Well, we are going to have to take you to Palooka because you can’t just leave this society. You are so stupid for trying to leave this society!” the officer proclaimed. The two officers grabbed Caleb and Peyton by the arms and rushed them inside the castle. Once another officer had seen the officers taking Caleb and Peyton inside, he ran to Palooka in her overly, ornate chair. He then whispered something to Palooka that would have infuriated anyone, but surprisingly when she heard the news she stayed perfectly calm.
She whispered something back to the guard, then he took Peyton and Caleb into the long hall, were Palooka had told them their new jobs. Palooka came in and screamed, “Why are you trying to leave this society?”
“We hate you!” Caleb yelled back. No one had ever said that they hated Palooka to her face, so naturally when she heard this remark she looked very
