They belong to the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) branch of the FBI. Hotchner is the team leader, but heavily consults with Gideon because he has the most experience. Phillip Dowd has a Narcissistic and Paranoid personality disorders. He was only concerned with himself and things that would personally benefit him. He has problems creating and maintaining relationships with his coworkers because he is only concerned with himself. Dowd, also frequently talked down to everyone and believed he was a superior being. This caused him to frequently lose jobs. Combine his disorder with his need to be a savior, it led him to being physical harm to others in order to satisfy his inflated ego and Hero Syndrome. When he saved the victims it would make him seem like he is better than everyone around him. He also, had Paranoid personality disorder. “Symptoms of paranoid personality disorder (PPD), characterized by maladaptive suspiciousness and distrust in the absence of psychotic symptoms, are associated with role impairment, substance dependence, and poor social functioning” (Locavino et al, 2014). Dowd showed some of these symptoms. For example Hotchner gained his trust by expressing psychotic mindset when talking about Dr. Reid. During the episode after the team said that the unsub could be or once was a police office, one of the cops leaked the media about the profile because he was angry at the BAU team. His angry caused him to go against the order to not release anything about the case. Also, Hotchner used Phillip Dowd’s feelings to influence his actions. Dowd was furious at everyone around him because he believed they hold him back and sabotage his work, so Hotchner told him about how Dr. Reid infuriates him because he can not shoot a gun no matter how many times he is taught. Dowd then let Hotchner beat up Dr. Reid, but this allowed Reid to grab the gun strapped around Hotch’s ankle. He then shot Dowd and saved the hostages. Hotchner was able to build a relationship with Dowd because he gained his trust by sympathizing with him.
