Nurses have been playing an important role in every aspect of healthcare. They are the ones closest to patients and every critical change would be reported from the nurse to doctor. Beside traditional staff nurse, nurses in the other departments help to contribute to the performance of patients as well. Intensive care nurse are those who specialize in providing the best and optimal care to critically ill and unstable patients. They usually work in the Intensive Care Unit departments at the hospital in different areas such as adults, pediatrics and infants. Fitzpatrick, Graham, and Lavandero stated the value of relationship between specialty certification and nurses’ perception of work life because it is the key addressing the nursing shortage in ICU department (2010, pg. 219) Critical care nurses are highly skilled and hard to replace () ICU nurses also play a main role in communicating with the family members during the critical care experience. They are the only healthcare provider that closest to the patients most of the time so they are in the ideal position to replying to patient’s family needs. In their experiment, Buckley and Andrew stated the family needs are grouped into 5 different areas: information, assurance, proximity, support and comfort (2011, pg. 264) Therefore, responding to the family’s need during this time is very important as it can reduce the negative effect of stress and worries on them. It also helps to strengthen the relationship between nurses and patients. Meeting those needs means a lot to the family and it is considered a primary component of critical care nursing. An intensive care nurse should be master at communication not only to the patients and their families but also to the other healthcare professionals.
