Charles Rodney had been broken down, forced to work and was beaten constantly for the last year. This last beating killed him. One of his good friends Rafe Caradec was on the ship when he was dying. He had Rafe to promise him to keep his ranch on his land in Wyoming safe and take care of his wife, Ann Rodney. Rafe promised him. Rafe went and traveled to his ranch in Wyoming. He went into the town’s saloon near his land and made a toast to Charles Rodney. Many of the people in the saloon cheered. But, one man thought he was clever and just smirked. The Indian was wounded, so Rafe helped her by setting her leg. They then saw a pack of Indians coming up over the hill. The Indians came up to them and surrounded them, but then the Indian girl told them that they Rafe helped her. The Sioux Indians let them go. They found the ranch, settled there and worked to clean it up to make it nice again. Rafe went back into the town and the guy that laughed was drunk and he was ready to have a shootout. Rafe just walked by. Then, the guy shot at him and missed. Rafe turned around and shot him in the chest. He died. His brother was on top of the building. Rafe saw him and shot him. He died too. He went into the saloon and his other brother got mad but didn't do anything. While he was there, he saw Ann Rodney, the widow of his friend Charles Rodney. She was dating the mayor and owned the land that Charles told Rafe to keep safe. The mayor wanted that land because the land had oil on it. Ann Rodney didn’t know about the oil. The mayor was one of the bad guys. Ann Rodney let Rafe stay at the ranch with 3 other men who helped take care of the ranch.
