2017 Tour of Crown Shred

Background
The Crown Shred tour took place 2 pm on March 16th at the Crown Shred headquarters on 225 6th Avenue East in Regina, Saskatchewan. Corry Shaw was the tour guide, and his tour lasted about 50 minutes, to cover all the waste steams that Crown Shred handle’s. The tour guide showed us the facility, various machines and all the processes they go through for the recyclables.
Introduction
Crown Shred is dedicated to continuous effort of reducing quantity of recyclable material from waste stream. They handle anything from office recycling, confidential document destruction, media destruction, and residential recycling. When the recyclables have been processed, separated and compacted it is than sold to manufacturing companies. Cory Shaw mentioned that every recyclable is based on the market, cardboard prices are very high so Crown Shred facility recycles cardboard materials as quick and efficiently as possible, where as plastics are down due to petroleum prices so they will hold them for as long as possible until the prices are up.

The second step is the separation of materials which begins with manual pre-sorting from the workers, and than is sorted by the machines. The separating machines include the ballistic separator which separates three dimensional products from various fibers. The OCC (old corrugated containers) separates cardboards from other recyclables. For separating metals a magnetic approach is used, which separates ferrous materials. When all the recyclables have been separated, they are compacted and sent off to various manufacturing companies across
