In The Chronicles of Narnia, there is a quote that says, “One day, you will be old enough to start reading fairytales again” This is a quote that people could take many ways, which is where the adventure starts with C.S. Lewis. The world of literature wouldn’t be the same without having one of the most well known authors. Clive Staples Lewis was an important and legendary literary author because of his early life and religion’s, his middle life and struggles being in the war, and his many famous books written.
C.S. Lewis had quite an eventful early life. He was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, United Kingdom. As a child, he was called Jack, and so for a large portion of his life, he went by Jack. Lewis had many roller coasters that happened with his religion. He was born and raised as an Anglican. He later became a determined atheist for many years. In late 1931, Lewis had a talk with J.R.R. Tolkien and Hugo Dyson. They wanted to discuss Lewis’s views on God (Davenport, 62). Lewis said that he “Couldn’t see how the life and death of someone else [Jesus Christ] 2,000 years ago could help us here and now” (Davenport, 63). Lewis’s father had just recently died from cancer, which made him question, if God did exist, why He would do something like that. Lewis, Tolkien, and Dyson talked until 3:00 in the morning, and when Tolkien left, Dyson discussed more about Christianity. He said that Christianity brought a sense of calm and offered unique possibilities for personal growth to its acts (Davenport, 64). This left Lewis in deep thought for more than a week, and nine days after the conversation, Lewis had been revived with his Christian religion and beliefs.
