Cultural Memoir Reflection

On March 2, 2016, the Cultural Memoir interview, related to diversity, was completed with my friend, Don Lun. This reflection paper will be referring to some interview discoveries comparing our cultural diversity and the need to value diversity in families by referencing connections in our readings in class. Referencing back to the interview questions, Don Lun talked about what makes her family unique. Being unique is simply being yourself. Not everyone is the same or alike. Don states, “every family is unique and that cultural practices will vary by household and by generation.” In similar comparison, my family has the same cultural belief that people are different than each other in many ways, but your family is what develops your values. In the class readings, Couchenour states, “understanding differences in families will help teachers support children’s sense of connection in their ethnic group” (Couchenour, 31). Teachers should be aware of student’s culture and what makes them who they are in the classroom. …show more content…
Don was born in Burma, Myanmar. A country in Asia. Her parents are very devoted Christians. Talking with Don she knows “that religion is very important in her household. However, it is not as important at this time away from home, even though her father is a pastor.” Coming from a high religion class and knowing the significant in her family, and now religion being not important to her was surprising to hear. In comparing my family culture, Christian religion is very important and should be a top priority in leading your daily life.
