In my future counseling ministry endeavors, I believe Entwistle’s (2010) text will serve as a useful source for developing a treatment plan for clients. As a result of this book, I am persuaded that integrating both psychology and theology will give me a more holistic approach when treating clients. Before reading this book I would have leaned towards more of an all biblical point of view, but now I am open to the possibilities of incorporating the two disciplines.…

Compare and Contrast Larry Crabb's Christian Counseling Methods with Albert Ellis and Carl Rogers Secular Methods Daniel Coffman Liberty University Part I: Goal of Christian Counseling As I am writing this I am reminded of a conversation I had with someone in my Church that is involved with our Addiction Ministry. He started to tell me of an attendee in one of the Friday night group counseling sessions that was more discouraged when they left the meeting than when they came in. I was curious at the approach the group took and wanted to know what the facilitator does to foster an environment where people can and will talk about their issues.…

This article deals with various intervention strategies that incorporate Scripture in psychotherapy, providing examples of a fictional client, George. This article is written to increase Christian counselors’ awareness of diverse Scripture interventions and to stimulate “divinely inspired creativity” in the further development of strategies (Garzon, 2005). At the beginning of the article, the author introduces the case of George and mentions ethical issues. He highlights the importance of assessment of clients’ religio-cultural background and of clarifying therapists’ own countertransference reactions to the possibility of using Scripture.…

The third pearl of wisdom I learned from the course textbook is the Holding Principle, which is essentially “Never act until you are sure that what you are about to do is not sin” (Adams, 1979 p. 31). Although it is a basic understanding to not act in sin, putting it into practice can be hard. Temptation is a very real tool the devil uses to ensnare Christians and non-Christians alike. It entangles people in webs of deception, lies, manipulation, and compromise. An example of this would be committing adultery.…

Counseling should be a conduit that allows us to point the hurting towards Christ and show that what they may feel is killing them is ultimately for their good. “As each of us journeys toward wholeness, and as we help clients on their journeys, we find that unforgiveness and forgiveness are entwined in our spiritual pilgrimage and our relationship with God” (McMinn, 2011, p. 285). It is the lifestyle of faith, trust and a hope that God know what He is doing.…

Christians in the helping profession need to understand that a human person is created by God in His image. In the Bible, Genesis 1:27 states, “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (New Living Translation). “Since the human person is created in the image of God, and since love of neighbor is at one with love of God, there is no higher calling than caring for the human person” (Gascoigne, 2015). A helping professional’s work is to show God’s love to their clients while helping them.…
