Cursive writing has become a casualty of technology. Many American elementary schools don’t teach it to their students. Because standardized testing has overwhelmed the curriculums, schools have become obsessed with ‘testing‘ knowledge, and cursive has been pushed aside deemed no longer important. Schools don’t teach students what matter, gaining only enough knowledge to answer multiple-choice questions. Younger Americans are typing or texting more and writing less. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable with today’s digital age. Children are increasingly learning on computers or tablets and moving away from hand writing notes; by slowing down the process of taking notes you accelerate learning. Learning cursive as well, students get another opportunity to understand the alphabet. They get a second chance to fully comprehend how the letters are formed. In my A.P Pyshcology class we learned the importance cursive handwriting has on our cognitive abilities, like reading. My teacher, he wrote everything in cursive and encouraged the class to take notes in cursive, explaining that our brain processes cursive writing differently than print writing, stating it ‘opens’ our minds; It’s not just what we write, but how. With cursive every letter is a continuous flow, with print writing the student has to pick up the pencil every time to start a new letter. The goal in reading is to read whole words rather than individual letters. Cursive writing encourages reading words instead of particular letters. Learning cursive helps improve penmanship and also helps to strengthen students’ abilities to read and understand difficult handwriting. With the skill to recognize how each letter can be written in many ways, they can read anything and understand its literary content. Cursive handwriting also improves students’ individual penmanship. The ability to read and write in cursive will promote student confidence in certain classes. The legibility of which will convey to the instructors, each students literary
