A possible chemical reason that this experiment yielded less than 100% cyclohexanone was due to the spontaneous decomposition of sodium hypochlorite, 2NaOCl = 2NaCl + O2, which decreased the amount of reactant present in the initial reaction when hypochlorous acid was formed, which was the oxidizing agent required to oxidize cyclohexanol into cyclohexanone. Sodium hypochlorite decomposed into O2 and NaCl due to a multitude of factors such as exposure to high temperatures, prolonged storage time or sunlight exposure. If a large enough quantity of the sodium hypochlorite was decomposed to limit the reaction that produced hypochlorous acid, the quantity of cyclohexanone produced may be affected. This would have resulted in a decrease in the production…
In the Acid-Catalyzed Hydration of norbornene, water and sulfuric acid were added to the C=C double bond to form norborneol. Sulfuric acid acted as a catalyst, where it was not consumed in the reaction and helped to propel the reaction forward, as it was vital in forming hydronium ion and breaking the double bond. Both the products endo-norborneol and exo-norborneol were synthesized; however regioselectivity and stereoselectivity played a role as to which product was more preferred and whether the equatorial or axial orientation of the hydroxy group was favored. The setup of the Cold-Finger, and the ability of norborneol to sublime readily allowed for the purification of the crude product to obtain the diastereomeric products exo- and endo-norborneol.…
Goals The goal of the lab was to investigate the properties and structure of an unidentified compound that was discovered in a local landfill. The group was called in to help determine the chemical and physical properties of the compound so we can let the people of the town know so it can be taken care of properly with or without further precautions to be taken. Another goal of this project was to devise the synthesis of the unknown compound. Experimental Design In order to determine the correct identity of our unknown compound, we first started with a couple preliminary tests, which include physical state and smell.…
R.C. 5.9 Mathematics (Mobile Infant) Activity: “Stack Them Up” Materials: Stacking blocks, nesting cups, measuring cups Infants are continually growing in all areas of development. In this activity, the goal is to get the infant to stack their blocks or cups. The teacher would have the child sit on the floor or at a table with their toys.…
1. a. My data demonstrated the law of conservation of mass in part 5 of the experiment, dissolving sugar in water. The law of conservation mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed by can enter or leave the system. The system’s change in mass was 0.00 grams, resulting in support of this statement.…

Experiment 5: Separating Ferrocene and Acetylferrocene by Adsorption Column Chromatography AIM The primary goal of this experiment is to separate ferrocene and acetylferrocene using adsorption column chromatography. Additionally, a dry pack method with a micro scale column will be implemented, and the percent recovery for each compound will be computed. TABLE OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND HAZARDS WITH STRUCTURES Ferrocene: - Physical Property: Solid Molecular Weight: 186.04 g/mole Boiling Point: 249 °C Melting Point: 173.5 °…
There may have been errors in the lab that may have affected the results of the lab. There may have been mistakes: a person may have not measured the substances correctly while retrieving the liquids in the graduated cylinder, or not have been watching the conductivity probe while the group was measuring the electrolyte solution. Along with these, there is also the issue of timing the testing incorrectly. Adding onto this, there may have been a slight spill where the accurate amount of the substance being used was not completely added into the water for testing.…
Nettie Stauts January 26, 2018 CDT-2413 Module 1 Lab Parents Perspective: The parents were apprehensive, but eager, entering their son Luke in a child care program. They were getting early intervention home-centered services in which Luke had progressed with assistance from his therapist and babysitter. He lacked social developmental skills and they heard about inclusion although unfamiliar with the concept. They were adapted interacting with Luke through gestures and augmentative communication devices yet anxious about his communication in the classroom.…
In this lab, we carried out a variety of reactions using different chemicals and metals. A chemical reaction is when the chemical state of the substance you are testing rearranges its ionic and molecular structure. One of the reactions we experienced was single replacement, this consists of one ion switching places with another ion to form a new compound. Another reaction we saw was double replacement. In this reaction, two compounds ions are switched to form two new compounds.…
The C-X bond has a partial double bond character. When the p-orbital of the halogen atom overlaps with the p electron cloud of benzene, its lone pair of electrons is delocalised into the aromatic ring. This results in the partial double bond character of the C-X bond which makes it more resistant to hydrolysis. (Primary reason)…
The dehydration of Cyclohexanol requires going through an acid-catalyzed elimination of water for the synthesis of cyclohexane from cyclohexanol. To get cyclohexane from cyclohexanol you must remove the cycloalkane with fractional distillation, drying with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and analyzed by GC data and the bromine test. The reaction we are trying to accomplish going from cyclohexanol to cyclohexene is a secondary alcohol going through an E1 reaction. This is the unimolecular elimination reaction in which Zaitsev’s rule applies where the most substituted alkene is formed.…
It is made when the amine group of 4-aminophenol is acetylated by acetic anhydride to produce paracetamol and the by-product of the reaction, acetic acid. Paracetamol is contains three functional groups; A hydroxyl group (OH), an amide group (HN-CO-R) and an aromatic group (benzene ring).…
These values are good considering the excess precipitate that stick to the walls of the reaction flask and the crude product lost to melting point determination and recrystallization solvent determination. It is expected that higher yields could be made without the removal of crude product from the two steps. From the 1H NMR spectra we expected to see peaks in the aromatic region around 6.5-8.0 PPM (5 H), a broad N-H peak around 8 PPM (1H) and a methyl group singlet peak around 2.2 PPM (3H). The 1H NMR spectra follows the expected spectra almost exactly as all the major peaks are present. While the aromatic splitting patterns are close together the correct integration value of roughly five is present.…
The list of errors start from the beginning of the experiment. Although the numbers seem to be close to the actual values, there is still room for error with the numbers. What the class noticed first is that we could have been working with very impure benzoic acid. The benzoic acid we were given was made by the 102 chemistry students, meaning that it wasn’t properly made. Students have said that they were rushed and weren’t able to take their time to filter the solid out of the solution.…
