The fictional classic, The Inferno, by Dante Alighieri, is where all spirits recieved their biggest desires. This is evident wehn focusing on how the souls’ punishments correspond with exactly what they wanted in life. Examples of this include the heretics being placed ina tomb, suicides not recieving a body, and the wrathful fighting. In the Carnal Dante and Virgil met the souls of Francisca and Paolo. These souls were placed in Hell because they lusted for one another. Due to their forebidden love, they are to spend all of eternity together, as lovers should. This is because the heretics are people that believed that when a person died, their soul died as well. Heretics, in Hell, are placed in tombs, where they stay forever. Some may say that no one, not just the heretics, would want to be put in a crypt. It is obvious that they should enjoy this because they were convinced that they were to be left to the grave when they passed. Because of this, their shades will not recieve a human form in the afterlife. Their punishment in Hell is to be a tree, which is enoguh to make the spirits happy. It is arguble that since the souls were not content with their life, and were content with their human form, that they should actually have a different punishemnt adn be a human. One cannot accpet this as an excuse because this menas that the spirits saw suicide, which is sacrificing their body, as a better option than resolving life’s problems. This is not a satisfactory defense for such an extermem measure as killing themselves. The people in circle five, also kn own as the wrathful, are here becasue they always insisted on fighting. These souls include people who destroyed families and friendships. The punishment of these people is to be fighting in a river of slime. One may say that these shades did not get what they wanted, as they fought for good reasons. This is debateable because they fought so much during their lifetha tone must think that since they did it so must, they enjoyed it. To add, the act of fighting itself will put a soul in Hell, not fighting for the wrong
