From the novel, Dark Inside
Around the world, there are situations where people trust one another yet on the same token, they can not always depend on each other. Broken trust can lead to danger which can lead to fear. In modern societies there are people who fiercely, yet secretly despise their own countrymen, peers, neighbours and so on. Although the negativity is not always “open” nor does it arise often, it is under the surface, almost like it is hidden, but it is definitely there. It is not clear what the root cause is for this secretive, mysterious behaviour that leads to fear and danger. In the novel Dark Inside, written by Jeyn Roberts, sureness and trust are demonstrated among the characters, through friends, …show more content…
In other words, people do not always appear to be what they seem. An example that shows the “true colours” of the people in the book can be found in the first chapter from the perspective of Clementine who psychologically, self-guides herself and gauges her dark moments as she experiences them in the story. From her viewpoint, she thought to herself that “the people looked sad and depressed in the black-and-white pictures decorating the walls” (Roberts, 21). Clementine creates an analogy of dark pictures to an even darker real world that she lives in and experiences everyday. People who Clementine thought she could trust, without warning, suddenly changed their demeanour and behaviour by attacking her family. It was baffling as to why the change in behaviour. It was startling and even depressing for Clementine to see her peers, who she had known her whole life, and her neighbours who she were fairly close to her family before the serious conflicts occurred could not be trusted at all. Another instance in the book that also describes this broken trust is when Mason comes across an old man with crutches named “Twiggy”. When he saw the man on the empty streets, Mason felt safe, not even giving it a second thought to any potential threat, as he judged the man by his appearance. The …show more content…
When Mason regained consciousness, he was still lying on the same sport where he collapsed. Oddly, Twiggy was still there. Mason wondered why Twiggy did not kill him which Twiggy replied that he would give Mason “a second chance”. When Mason got up from the ground and started to leave, the crazy old man, Twiggy menacingly states, “We’ll find you. You’ll never hide long enough. We’ll find you and kill each and every last one of you. All alone” (Roberts, 172). These words indicate to Mason and the readers of the novel to be careful of their surroundings and to fear bad situations. Another example of fear can be seen through Aries’s experiences in the novel. When Aries was with her classmates at school hiding from the crazed society of murderers. While hiding, she hears hears a scream from one of her friends. The scream quiets down afterwards, with an eery feeling. “Silence filled the halls, pressing down on Aries’s skull. She couldn’t speak; her tongue was glued against her teeth” (Roberts, 108). Aria feared for her life as it was clear that one of her classmates was killed by these brutes. Anyone would naturally feel fear in this particular tense situation but it plays to the common theme of everyday fear occurrences in the novel and even in the real
