Now, let's take a closer look at the perception of respect. Most people demand different amounts of respect, though not everyone is willing to give the amount needed nor deserved. It means to have a regard for other peoples' feelings, listening to people and hearing them, i.e. giving them one's full attention. Even more importantly, respect means treating one with dignity.
The assumed notation that every human being and nation, irrespective of their power or strength, has the right to be respected. It is the building blocks for a positive step in building relationships, which are central to conflict resolution. One does not necessarily have to like a person in order to understand their viewpoint nor agree to their viewpoint to respect them. Respect is the driving force on any relationship big or small. Respect is one of the foundations of the human society, because without this feeling constructing human relations would be impossible.
Contempt and humiliation are the absence of respect, as are a sense of being unheard or misunderstood. In the absence of respect, whether real or perceived, often leads to conflict.
