Delaware lies on a small niche of the Eastern American border. Henry Hudson is credited with the discovery of Massachusetts in 1609. Henry Hudson was working for the Dutch East India Company and he discovered the Delaware Bay and River, which allowed easily accessible routes for trade. This made Delaware a desirable stop for traders and merchants. The natives to the state were the Lenape, Algonquian and the Powhatan Indians. The first natives were of the Paleo-Indian culture that lived in caves and were Nomadic hunters, which was quite common for that time. In the 1400’s the Lenape and Algonquian tribes, settled along the Delaware River. The natives were simple people commonly living in wigwams and longhouses. Eventually, it fell under English rule in 1664. That same year, James the Duke of York and the brother of King Charles II created an expedition that easily removed the Dutch from both the Delaware and Hudson rivers, which left the Duke of York the leader of the entire state. The state was transferred to William Penn as the lower three counties in 1682 to provide Pennsylvania with more land. Delaware fought as a separate state in the American Revolution and became the first state to ratify the Constitution in 1787, which makes Delaware the first part of the new nation. Delaware has rich industrial, cultural, and intense past before the Constitution. The different people groups of Delaware carry a harsh history. The Dutch had invaded and made a second home there. This made the Indians angry towards the Dutch. In 1632, The Dutch settlement is destroyed. Members of the tribe are so encouraged by the raid, they ended up massacring the Dutch settlement, killing all of its inhabitants. The Dutch introduced slavery in 1639. These men included George Read, Gunning Bedford Jr., John Dickinson, Richard Basset, and Jacob Broom. George Read was born in Maryland in 1734. His grandfather was an Irishman, who lived in the city of Dublin, and owned a large financial fortune. His son, John Read, George Read’s dad, immigrated to America and lived in Maryland, where he pursued the occupation of a planter. Not long after the birth of his oldest son, he moved with his family into the province of Delaware, and settled in the county of Newcastle, where George was raised. The following years, George pursued the law, and though surrounded by men of high positions of authority and influence in the same profession as him, he soon acquired the confidence of public speaking, and obtained a respectable share of many businesses. In 1763, he was appointed to succeed John Ross, as attorney general of the three lower counties in Delaware. George Read held this position until the year 1775, when he was elected to congress. George was then elected president of the convention which formed the first constitution of the state of Delaware. Gunning Bedford Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1747. He was the fifth child of eleven children. Gunning left his home at the age of twenty to study law at Nassau Hall. He graduated in 1771.
