Out of all the characters in Othello, Desdemona embodies love the most. Desdemona seemingly thinks with her heart instead of her mind. Iago is disgusted that Othello promoted Cassio to the lieutenant position. Iago claims to have all the qualifications to be lieutenant by saying, “there are others / who putting on a good show of duty/ are really looking put for their own interest”( 50-52); pretending to be a trustworthy friend of Othello’s, Iago reveals his true motive is to “serve my turn upon him” (42). Iago starts by convincing Barbantio, Desdemona’s father, that Othello is casting spells on Desdemona to make her fall in love. Iago then goes after Cassio, saying that he and Desdemona are having an affair in hopes that Othello will demote Cassio as lieutenant. It certainly is not true that Desdemona is having an affair; however, Othello begins to believe Iago when the handkerchief that was stolen from Desdemona by Iago’s wife ends up in the hands of Cassio. Othello is so affected by Iago’s lies that he kills Desdemona. Once Iago’s wife finds out the reasoning for stealing the handkerchief, she exposes the truth to Othello saying, “Oh, my lady, a villain has toyed with your love/ My husband said she was unfaithful” (181-182).
