According to Sacrosanctum Concilium Roman Catholics have faith in God in that he is merciful and offers salvation. As stated, “Therefore the Church announces the good tidings of salvation to those who do not believe, so that all men may know the true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, and may be converted from their ways, doing penance.” In other words they believe that all of the members of the Church are saved if they actively participate in communion, doing good works, and countless other things. Presbyterians, on the other hand, see things to be a little bit altered to the Roman Catholics. Presbyterianism was brought about by the Reformers, Calvin and Zwingli. Some have faith in predestination and that only elect are saved. And others trust that we are saved by faith alone and saved by scripture alone. Now saying this one might think that the two religions are very different, however through my observations I have seen more similarities than differences. Sitting through a Roman Catholic mass I could see Gods Mercy throughout all people. The people were exceptionally pleasant. They prayed together for forgiveness of their sins. Roman Catholics see that the scripture is sacred, inspired and authoritative. It is inspired because the Holy Spirit breathes into authors who then write it. As stated through Dei Verbum, “Therefore ‘all Scripture is divinely inspired and has its use for teaching the truth and refuting error, for reformation of manners and discipline in right living, so that the man who belongs to God may be efficient and equipped for good work of every kind’.” In other words scripture is inspired by God so as to ensure that we may learn the word of the Lord as it truly is. It is authoritative in that it spreads the good news and shares how God wants us to live. Presbyterians see that God inspires Holy Scripture through Jesus Christ. Scripture is God’s word which, like the Roman Catholics, is written by man and woman through the Holy Spirit. They also believe that it is authoritative. They trust that scripture alone saves us. They might say that through scripture people have the opportunity to believe, and through believing they can hope, and through hope they will love. Proving that scripture alone does save use. This is especially evident in what I said previously about what I experienced in the Presbyterian Church. Through an interview I held with a lady named Shirley I was able to see just how much scripture means to people of Presbyterian worship, “We all got together and cried out to God. We prayed whatever the Holy Spirit laid on our
