Identity is influenced by our environment, the people around us, and experiences. Our identity is never complete, it is ever changing. You could go through good, bad, or new experiences that could affect your identity. The author reveals identity throughout the story, it could involve the character going through new or different experiences throughout the story or maybe the character is affected because of the people around them. Dicey and James from Homecoming have many similarities and differences.

Dicey is very resourceful because when her family was trying to get back to Bridgeport they needed food to eat, but didn’t have enough money. Dicey would catch fish and clams so that her family had something to eat, but it also made her wise because

One day almost to Aunt Cilla’s house James and his family were at Stewart and Windy's house James had this idea that he would steal Stewart's money so that his family could have it. But Dicey knew James had took the money. So she yelled at James for being immature and childish because he should know better then to steal things that are not his. That also, showed how careless James was because he could of cost his family a ride to Aunt Cilla’s which they desperately needed. James can be impatient sometimes, for example he tried to go fishing but couldn't catch anything even though Sammy said that there were fish James did not believe him and gave up. One day when James and his family arrived at Cousin Eunice’s house James was told that he had to start school. James was not pleased with had been said, but when he went to school he had found an excitement for learning. Dicey used the environment ot clean and dry clothes which teaches her to be responsible because Dicey had to make sure her family had clothes to wear. Similarly, Dicey had left James in charge of Maybeth and Sammy when she was gone. That showed me that James was responsible because Dicey trusted him to take care of Maybeth and Sammy alone without any help. One time Dicey and her siblings went to the grocery store, but did not have any money to buy any food or something to drink, but then Dicey with her quick and intelligent thinking thought of an idea to earn money by carrying people's groceries to their cars so that they could get tipped and be able to buy food. Likewise, James was sent to school, but then once he started to learn he realized how intelligent he really was he would come home and tell Dicey all about what he had learned that day. Lastly, Dicey was thankful because she needed money to buy a map, but didn’t have enough money to do that. So she went to the store owner and asked if she could do anything for him to get the map. Luckily the store owner let Dicey clean windows to pay for the map. Which made Dicey thankful because he did not have to do that. In addition, when James got the opportunity to go to school which made him thankful because he got to learn new things that he hadn’t known before.

Thus, Dicey and James have many similarities, but also many differences. The author shaped
