The goals of doing research in biochemistry and biotechnology, along with others, are to find the truth about natural and unnatural occurrences with the help of the laws of nature. It is very important to note that the goal of most research is to simply answer, “what is going on;” it is possible that this question may have one or more answers. In the case of an experiment, the scientist may not know the outcome of their experiments, although they may have preconceived notations of what may happen. A lab notebook consists of mandatory well organized and thought out way to prove one’s intellectual property in the future or to share information. It should include one’s hypotheses, all experimental data and results, experimental questions, experimental design, and one’s conclusions. Along with those previously listed, a lab notebook should include accurate dates, a purpose, a brief overview, and detailed steps of experiment procedure. The title is simply the title of the experiment performed in the previous lab. The introduction must be no more than 200 words and should be a brief summary of the experiment and the experimental data. The materials and methods should include all the materials used in the lab and should list all of the methods used to achieve the results. The results are the data collected in the lab and can be expressed in many ways including graphs and pictures. The discussion allows you to explain and further talk about the result you received from the experiment, including what went wrong in experiment and what error contributed to the results.
Presentation and analysis of data:
Statistics is a useful way to collect and organize data to make future inferences and to refer back to. Through the help of statistics scientist are able to collect large sums of data, store and analyze them. Some very important statistic term includes but are not limited to accuracy (how correct you are), precision (how close in proximity you are), error (accuracy), reproducibility (can the experiment be done again and at what rate or percentage; chances of reproducing the same results), mean (average) and standard deviation (how spread out numbers are; precision and reproducibility).
