Discrimination in different ways
This section is all about accepting others and their choices. Each of the stories or movie, that I have picked somehow, gives out the idea of accepting others. However, each one portrays acceptance in a different way. It's not always about accepting people for whom they are. Its also about accepting the choices that people make. Or the way they have decided to live.

Another form of discrimination can be found in Texas V. Johnson the Majority Opinion. The whole argument in Texas V. Johnson Majority Opinion is if you should be punished for not respecting the American flag. Some die hard Americans believe that you should be, but the Court system has to disagree. “We are fortified in today’s conclusion by our

Discrimination can be found in many different ways, it's not just about discriminating against people’s races. Discriminating can also include, judging someone’s religion, or gender, maybe even how they act or what they wear. The case in Bullied, is that Jamie Nabozny is discriminated against for his sexuality. Nabozny, was bullied by his peers for being a homosexual and for most of his life in school, he was discriminated against. It started in 7th grade with just name calling, such as “queer” or “sissy”. Eventually though, the demeaning words turned physical. His teachers and the principal, the people who were supposed to protect Jamie, failed to do so. “Boys will be boys.” (Bullied). Was what was said by Jamie’s middle school principal when a conference was called about Jamie being constantly harassed by his peers. You would think the principal of all people would be the most accepting. In this case we see that this is not true. It's mind boggling that a principal would even say such a thing. The job of a principal is to protect the students that attend their school. Another thing that was said by Jamie’s principal was, “If he doesn’t want to be bullied, then he shouldn’t be so openly gay.” (Bullied). For a principal to say this..is awful. This shows that this principal is discriminating against Jamie as well, just like Jamie’s own peers. In high school, one teacher even supported

“Boys will be boys” my mom said nonchalantly as I told her what had occurred in my last class period of the day. It baffled me how a teenage boy being mocked for his sexuality could be so trivial in her eyes. I didn’t understand how the struggle for gay rights was any different from black rights or feminism. To me we were all united, brought together by our interminable fight for equality and acceptance. As an amiable and peaceful introvert I find it difficult to stand up for what I believe is right.…

Racism and discrimination towards chicanos has been around for a very long time, but where did it begin and how are chicanos still being discriminated against today. Some would say that the majority of discrimination occurred after the Mexican American war which lasted from 1846 to 1848. After the United States took A big chunk of land from Mexico including the states California and Texas the mexicans that already lived in those parts were granted citizenship and were now called mexican americans. Authorities in Texas systematically disenfranchised Mexican Americans, and prevented them from serving in local government, while vigilantes, with broad support from the white communities, terrorized Mexican Americans in southern Texas,…

The claim Fisher made against The University of Texas was that students should be reviewed equally and that using race as a deciding factor for admissions was against constitutional rights. In the past, cases related to this began winning with Brown vs Board of Education. Brown vs. Board of Education implemented that “racial discrimination in public education is unconstitutional” and students could not be discriminated by their race (Purdy, pg.1). However, the court’s favoring in this decision was not upheld in the case, Grutter vs Bollinger. This was when “racial preference” for school admissions was condoned by the court (Purdy, pg.1-2).…

What is discrimination- discrimination is the behaviour or actions usually negative towards and individual or a group of people especially on the basis of sex, race, and social class. Discrimination may mean putting other people down, not allowing them to participate in activities, restricting their access to work or to live in certain neighbourhoods, or denying them something they are allowed. Discrimination. To me, discrimination is putting someone down or treating them badly because of their race, gender, or sexuality. African Americans were tormented for a long period of time just because we had a darker skin tone than everyone else. We have advanced in society since this time. There were some African Americans, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks, who have had an impact on how we live today.…

Separate but equal is a common phrase heard throughout history based on the discrimination against African Americans at that time. This ideology of segregation was especially enforced by the U.S. Supreme Court case of Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896. The case starts with Homer Plessy’s decision to sit on the white only side on the railroads even though he is a person of color. Plessy ended up being arrested for his refusal of sitting on the seats for African Americans since it is a Louisiana law to use facilities designed for one’s race. To defend himself, Plessy argues that segregation of people is a violation of his freedom.…

Discrimination, unfair treatment of people based on their social category (Carl & Bélanger, 2015, p. 172). Discrimination would be like disrespecting someone physically or emotionally in a way because of there social group and in racial profiling, this happens a lot for example: a young African-American going into a dollar store with a bag and he opens it to get his wallet and the clerk thinks his stealing and forcibly removes the bad from him and opens it to find nothing and kicks him out. In a way this is discriminating in a racial profiling way of S.W.B “Shopping While Black” and this happened to Mary McCarthy, where she was discriminately racial profilled at a Shoppers Drug Mart (Pharmaprix) (Hasham, 2015). She just opened her bag and there was an employee who saw her and confronted her in a negative tone and told her to open the bag and the employee opened it and found nothing. Mary McCarthy just came back from her office at the University of Toronto where she is completing her PhD on racism (Hasham, 2015).…

A person’s bias can affect their judgment, as well as opinions and rules for what they believe others should oblige by. Teachers or members of school boards have a large amount of influence to the ways in which schools function and what rules are established. With this in mind, it is not hard to see where much of decision is influenced, which relies on teachers opinions and bias towards whether or not they should make rules to prevent Lgbt bullying. “In a study surveying members of the National Education Association (NEA), Bradshaw and colleagues found that teachers and educational support professionals felt the least comfortable intervening with bullying regarding sexual orientation” ( Kolbert 249). However, if a teacher themselves is of the Lgbt community, they have been shown to be more supportive of Lgbt rights in schools, and to help students with bullying problems (Lavin 1).…

A current issue in education is the lack of support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students (LGBT). Transgender refers to a person’s gender identify--a person’s innate sense of being male, female, or somewhere in between( Banks& Banks, 2013). School are starting altering these practices: inviting same-sex couples to prom, providing gender neutral or individual bathrooms and locker rooms for transgender student, and including LGBT people and perspectives in the curriculum (McCollum, 2010). With acceptance, this population still face discrimination and prejudice. In school, LGBT students are harassed and bullied.…
