Along with that trend, “[i]n 2010, 27.5 percent of Hispanic households and 41.8 percent of African American households with children under the age of 5 lived below the poverty line, compared to only 13.5 percent of non-Hispanic white households. The same negative outlook followed similar trends in lack of health insurance and employment among minorities. At the University of Arizona, minority students are asking for more than they feel they have been receiving, inclusion. Diversity and inclusions have been of concern at the University of Arizona’s campus so much that a diversity task force is being constructed. The consideration that has become known is where these populations are immigrating from such as Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, and other places. No matter the feeling about immigration rights and responsibilities, these parts of the country as with all parts have finite resources. These resources are in Florida’s state university system in particular is receiving more funding and attention specifically from newly appointed Senate president, Senator Joe Negron. Last week in local university news, Senator Negron’s listening tour was the focus and as well as his proposal to increase university funding by $1 billion. No mention was made of any suggested plans or agendas connected to that funding proposal, however, “when he was formally tapped for the position… [he offered] a slate of changes that would include making financial aid programs more generous for students and competing for top out-of-state students” (Larrabee, 2016). Alternately, at the University of Arizona, the Board of Regents has voted the raise tuition 3.2% for the incoming in-state tuition. One regent, Bill Ridenour, commented ‘"I feel that the University of Arizona has gotten to a point where their tuition may not be competitive with their peers"’.
