Donald Trump's Argument Analysis

Decent Essays
President Donald Trump believes the National Football League (NFL) is “disrespecting our great country” by refusing to stand for the National Anthem and wants to force players to stand. Even though Roger Goodell, the Commissioner of the NFL, believes the players should stand, he will not force his beliefs on the players. President Trump’s argument is invalid because it is an appeal to the respect Americans have for our military authority. This example of appeal to authority has many risks, because this fallacy conveys that if a figure of authority states something, it must be true. However, Trump is accusing the players of protesting against our country, while they are really protesting police brutality. The NFL and players are walking a fine line by potentially offending a nation of people that are grateful to military veterans. …show more content…
Also, while most people agree that honoring our flag and our National Anthem is patriotic, our country also allows freedom of speech. President Trump would gain power over the NFL by mandating the players to follow his order. However, he would risk violating some of our Constitutional rights by making a Presidential order to force a controversial issue. It is important for people to recognize this flawed argument. Forcing citizens to obey a Presidential opinion without consideration of their right to protest would violate free speech and exactly the type of freedoms this country was predicated

Standing Up Who knew you could stand up for what you believe in by sitting down? Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was doing exactly that when he sat down during the playing of the national anthem before a pro-football game; I agree and approve of what he did. He was protesting the different treatment of colored people and also the cops. After reading the article, ¨In the `Land of the Free,` Are You Free to Sit Out the National Anthem?¨ by Jaweed Kaleem, I learned that Colin Kaepernick is not the only one taking a stand.…

Football players in the NFL are kneeling during the national anthem protesting racial inequality. Which isn’t going to help the cause. Kneeling during the national anthem is disrespectful and isn’t going to solve the situation at hand. Kneeling is disrespectful to the flag, the country, and the soldiers who died for our country. For the teams coming on the field after the national anthem, that is not going to solve the cause either.…

NFL Protest The most recent major sports league uproar has been the protests during our National Anthem. NFL players across every team have been kneeling, linking arms, or even just staying in the locker room. President Donald Trump spoke out about the situation on Twitter saying that the players should be suspended or fired for “disrespecting” our country. One of the points made by Trump was his approval of the players that were locking arms and complete disappointment by those who chose to kneel or stay in the locker room. I personally believe that it is your choice to kneel, lock arms, or stay in the locker room.…

No one is forcing him to stand during the anthem, but the NFL states that “players are encouraged” to do so (NFL.com). Some who support Kaepernick’s protest believe that one of the things The National Anthem stands for is our freedom, therefore it is his choice to decide whether to sit or stand. I acknowledge that it is Kaepernick’s right to decide whether or not he wants to support The National Anthem, but this is not enough of a reason to make his action justifiable. Just because something isn’t illegal, doesn’t mean that it is morally okay to do; an example of this situation is adultery. In around half of the states in The US it is not illegal to cheat on your husband or wife (Freep.com), but most of us would consider this action morally wrong.…

Many players did not like the feedback Trump said about the NFL at one of his conventions, he stated "Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he's fired. He's fired!". I believe that the main issue of weather it is right for NFL players to kneel during the National Anthem is majorly a racist issue. The proof behind this reasoning is that Collin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers quarterback stated that he was , "not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." Personally I disagree with his opinion. Holding your hand over your heart is a tradition that has been carried on for many years that honors what our country stands for, which is not oppressing colors of race. Although there are many opinions on that statement, America has many different races, cultures, and ethnicity throughout our nation.…

According to Irving Janes (1972), groupthink occurs when a group makes an irrational decision because of group pressure fostering and the deterioration of ‘mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgement” (Irving, Janis, Victims of groupthink, p.9). Social influence is the effect that people have upon the beliefs or behaviors of others (Aaronson, 2004). Both groupthink and social influence theory have a factor in what we see as an ongoing reaction to the silent protest started by Colin Kaepernick in August 2016. In recent news on October 1, 2017 during a game between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers, about 30 of the 49ers players took a knee during the national anthem.…
