Double Bind Analysis

I had a tough time thinking of a double bind I myself have been in on the spot. I’m sure at one time or another I have been in a double bind in my life a nearly everyone has. The closest I could think of I myself potentially putting someone else in a double bind as of recently. I have a particular coworker who I am not very fond of for a multitude of reasons a main one being that he talk incessantly and most often regarding her negative opinions on other coworkers. Although I’m nice to her and make my best efforts not to disturb the working relationship it has become painfully obvious through my avoidant behavior that I’m not fond of her.

We work in a retail environment both of us often closing the store and on the evenings we work together she sticks closely by my side and over the months since she began working she has seemed to grow increasingly fond of me. This coworker has begun to invite me to hang out with her outside of work and I find any excuse as to why I can’t and over time my excuse have grown increasingly transparent. I make a great effort to be kind to her and maintain a civil demeanor to keep thing from becoming awkward or uncomfortable. It seems that she has mistaken this for friendship and as I continually deny her request to hang out outside of work she’ s most likely getting fairly mixed signals.

Many of my coworkers are my friends and we often get together outside of work most recently having a night out together that turned into a “store sleepover”, in which four girls from work spent the night at my house. Two of the girls were discussing some of the events from that night in the break area and she had overheard it. She questioned me about it in a seemingly non-confrontational way but it was fairly obvious her feeling had been hurt. I didn’t know if I was supposed to apologize or how to do so without indicating that we actively didn’t invite

I tried to explain myself, but she started to cuss while flailing her arms in the air. I felt like I wanted to crawl in a hole, super embarrassed. Not to mention the fact she didn’t want anything to do with me over something so small, and even fixable. Others around her looked to see what the commotion was about, but…

“Black Hair” by Gary Soto has a specific line that reminds me of what an average day in high school for me was like, “The days were dull. I did what there was to do from morning until the bell sounded”. I usually felt this way because, like Soto in his autobiographical story he felt alienated from everyone around him. I am about to tell you my story of a time in my life where I felt shunned by everyone.…

On the surface, envy seems to be one of the deadly vices that many believe is very clear cut. Julie Barnhill states in her article ‘The Comparison Trap’, “every day, everywhere, from every age bracket, and even despite our faith in Jesus Christ, we size each other up, comparing supposed weaknesses and trying to make ourselves feel better by ignoring or brushing off one another” (Barnhill, 2004). When looking at envy this way it seems that this vice is a superficial, unimportant part of life that we just need to deal with. A survey conducted in 2008-2009 asked respondents to rate what they believed to be the deadliest sin to be and envy was rated last with 0% by all respondents, male and female (Capps & Haupt, 2011). Rebecca DeYoung states…

My AP Literature teacher, Mr. Mercer, once asked my class a serious question: why do women apologize so much? A thoughtful pause followed while the class, females especially, pondered the answer. My teacher elaborated with a short anecdote about a female student from a previous class: Mr. Mercer was standing in front of the doorway before class, speaking with another student. The female student approached the doorway so Mr. Mercer and the student courteously moved out of the way. The female student nodded and uttered a quick “sorry” as she hustled past them.…

I immediately quieted down. I felt guilty. She couldn't possibly be friends with me, and there was no way I could have made her tears any better. Besides, the only time she could continue to talk to me required stayed here for even longer after dark. It also made me realize that I should have invited them in and given her something, like a candy bar, at least, as a gesture of gratitude. No sooner had I thought this, than my wife gave me a bewildered look with her wallet in my hand and when I told her what the girl said she immediately told me why did I let them go. I don 't really know. I definitely did not want to offer cash as I truly felt it would insult them and I did not want them to think I doubted their motives for returning it.…

My Junior year of high school, two best friends on my cheerleading team had a falling out and the events between them greatly affected their ability to work together. We were all members of the same stunt group along with another girl who was unaware of the problem. In practice, none of our stunts were working very well because both girls were putting less energy into the lifting me so the other would have to put more into it. I was not aware that they had a falling out, but after being dropped on the floor multiple times, I took them aside to talk to them. They refused to talk to me together, so I talked to them one on one.…

There are three halls and three of us, so each feeding assistant was assigned to one hall. That day something came up and we were not able to finish our ice on all three halls, so after we fed the residents supper we were expected to finish the ice on our break. We finished supper and cleaned up and it was time to finish ice, but the other two girls said they did not want to do it yet and that the residents don’t even drink the water anyway. I took this comment, as they were not going to finish passing out the ice, so I took the matter into my hands and told them I was going to do my hall and they should start on theirs. Once had I finished my hall, I saw that they hadn’t done a thing and continued to sit in the break room, so I began on the other two halls.…

An ethical dilemma is considered a circumstance that requires someone two equally unfavorable situations. Unfortunately the ethical dilemma does not solve the initial problem, but nurses and other health care providers must assess and clarify the ethical dilemma and gather data. Once the dilemma has been identified, healthcare providers can identify options and make decisions to act (Black, 2017). In the Lee’s case, these strategies were not put into place soon enough. Step one in the ethical decision making model is identifing the problem and factors maintaining the problem.…
